Kanna, also known by its botanical / scientific name sceletium tortuosum, is a plant native to South Africa with a history of use dating back to the 1600s.  Traditionally it was used by the indigenous Khoisan people, who chewed, smoked, took it as a snuff, or prepared it as a tea.  In some cases it was fermented as a preparation step.  In today's standardized extracts it is known for its uplifting, calming effects. It helps soften stress and tension while gently elevating mood, creating a sense of ease, clarity, and emotional openness.  Often described as a subtle, buoyant shift in how you feel, kanna supports presence, connection, and a natural sense of flow.  The active compounds are primarily alkaloids, with mesembrine, mesembrenone, and mesembrenol being the most significant. The mechanism of action of these compounds includes several key interactions with neurotransmitter systems in the brain.  See the 'How Does Kanna Work?' page for the science!
